40 Years of Student Assessment: Past Lessons, Promising Directions
The theme this year is 40 Years of Student Assessment: Past Lessons, Promising Directions.
This year we are particularly interested in looking at salient issues around assessment that look at where we are, where we need to be, and what needs to be done in order to get us towards closing the achievement gap for all students.
The conference provides a forum for participants to share professional expertise and strengthen mutual understanding and relationships, to build a national and global educational assessment community.

General Proposal Submission Overview
- Read through Proposal Format and prepare each proposal section in compliance with guidelines.
- Read through Proposal Review Process
- To submit your proposal, click the "Click Here to Submit" link located above in the blue box to the right
- Complete online submission form:
- Enter the title of your proposal (Limited to 15 words. Should clearly indicate the specific nature of the study or project.)
- Select 60 Minute Symposium or 90 Minute Symposium presentation format
- Select assessment level and assessment type
- Select conference strands. If selecting more then one assessment strand, you must select it in order of importance to your proposal.
- Enter lead presenter, presenters, discussant, and moderator information
- Enter your review abstract for reviewing purposes. The Planning Committee will be rating your proposal based on your abstract. (Limited to 150 words)
- Enter a session description for your proposal. This section is different from the review abstract. If your proposal is selected, the session description will be used in the on-site program only. (Limited to 60 words)
- Submit proposal.
To promote broad participation, individuals are limited to program inclusion four times; twice as presenters and twice in the role of moderator or discussant. This limit does not include participation in CCSSO invited sessions.
NOTE: Proposals submitted with incomplete presenter information or violating any of the submission guidelines will not be considered.

- Up to four presenters on the 60 Minute Symposium
- Up to six presenters on the 90 Minute Symposium
- One presenter must be identified as the lead presenter (primary contact person). As all correspondence will be conducted via email with the primary contact person, email address must be valid. The primary contact person is responsible for communication with other presenters and for ensuring compliance with copyright law.
- You will be required to submit the following for all presenters:
- first and last name
- organization
- title
- street address, city, state/province, zip code
- email address
- phone number
- If you have co-presenters, discussants, or moderators but do not complete their information, you will not be able to complete the proposal submission.
- Presenters of accepted proposals will be required to register for the conference, and assume costs related to travel, accommodations, and registration.
Proposal Format
Submission Steps
Proposal submission will consist of five steps.
- Title
- The title of your session – 15 word limit
- The submitter's email address
- Format
- Assessment Type and Assessment Level
- Session Strand(s) - If selecting more then one assessment strand, you must select it in order of importance to your particular proposal.
- People
- You must enter a lead presenter, and you have the option to enter co-presenters, moderators, and discussants
- Review Abstract
- The review proposal will be used when reviewing and scoring your submission
- This will appear in the online program only
- 150 word limit
- Session Description
- The program session description will be used as the session description that will appear in the on-site program only
- 60 word limit
- Confirmation
The online proposal submittal system will strictly enforce the text format described above. Each element will be entered in a separate box in the order shown. Do not include section headings in the text you enter. (The headings will be rendered automatically by the system when displaying what you have entered.)
Proposal Review Process
Proposal Review Process
The following five criteria will be used to evaluate all proposals in the proposal review process. The Program Committee will keep the following dimensions in mind when rating the proposals:
- Relevance to the Strand (to what degree does the proposal address central topics within the strand)
- Relevance for the Attendees (to what degree does the proposal address topics of importance to a broad audience)
- The Quality of the Written Proposal (to what degree is the proposal well-written and meets appropriate technical standards)
- Innovations (to what degree does the proposal introduce or promote the development of new ideas or skills)
- Diversity (to what degree does the proposal show the diversity of opinions, methods, or practices)
Proposals will be reviewed by a planning committee of CCSSO staff, state and district assessment personnel, test developers, federal agency personnel, university personnel, and regional lab personnel with expertise in education issues. During the proposal review process, the planning committee members will not rate any proposals that they are participating. Notification of accepted proposals will be provided by mid-to-late December 2009.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Q: What is the submission deadline for the abstracts?
A: The deadline for all abstracts is Sunday, October 11, 2009. Submissions that are incomplete at this time will be withdrawn.
- Q: How long can the abstracts be?
A: The Review abstract is limited to 150 words. The session description is limited to 60 words.
- Q: I've already begun a submission, how do I return to it?
A: When you began your submission, you should have received an email which contains a link directly back to your submission. Or, you can log into your submission on the right side of this page.
- Q: I began a submission, but didn't receive any emails.
A: Make sure that the email address entered on the title step is correct. Please also make sure that you've added ccsso@confex.com to your address book.
- Q: I don't remember my login information.
A: Click here and we will send you an email reminder.
- Q: When will I be notified if my proposal has been accepted?
A: Notification of acceptance will be emailed to presenters in mid-to-late December, 2009.
