Presenters will describe research on item response demands, item writing, and targeting proficiency levels. Presentations include a framework of cognitive, linguistic, and content-based item response demands; empirical findings on item features related to cognition and that predict item difficulty; cognitive modeling studies of science items; and the classroom assessment perspective. Discussants will comment regarding instructional sensitivity and improving best practices.
