    SUMMARY:
With the advent of the assessment consortia end-of-year tests for students at third grade and beyond, many states are turning attention to the assessment of students in grades K-3. However, what kind of assessment is appropriate for young children? What kind of assessment will provide teachers with the information they need to support children’s learning? Using the experience of North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in developing, field-testing, and implementing an innovative approach to K-3 assessment, the presentations in this symposium will address these questions.
